🧠 Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a non-invasive test that records the brain’s electrical activity—essentially capturing your brainwaves in real time.
⚙️ How It Works
- Small metal discs called electrodes are placed on your scalp.
- These electrodes detect the electrical impulses generated by neurons communicating in your brain.
- The signals are amplified and displayed as wavy lines on a monitor or printout, showing patterns of brain activity.
🧪 What It’s Used For
EEGs are commonly used to:
- Diagnose epilepsy and other seizure disorders
- Detect brain tumors, stroke, or head injuries
- Evaluate sleep disorders and encephalopathies
- Monitor brain activity in comatose patients or assess brain death
🛌 Types of EEG Tests
Type | Description |
---|---|
Routine EEG | Short test (20–40 min) done while awake |
Sleep EEG | Conducted during sleep to detect abnormalities |
Ambulatory EEG | Worn for 24+ hours to monitor activity at home |
Video EEG | Combines EEG with video to observe behavior |
🧘 What to Expect
- The test is painless and safe.
- You may be asked to relax, breathe deeply, or look at flashing lights.
- In some cases, sleep deprivation is required to enhance results.
EEGs are like a window into your brain’s electrical symphony—helping doctors understand what’s going on beneath the surface.
